An excerpt from Dr. Jane Ilene Cohen’s upcoming book, called: “Your Life Is Designed to Work.”

We are never experiencing reality directly. We are only experiencing a model of reality. The full experience of reality consists of way more than we human beings have the ability to be aware of. And what we can be aware of still consists of a massive amount of information.

The information we can be aware of bombards your senses every moment, in every situation or experience you are in. It would be impossible to take all of this information in. By necessity, you filter in a very small percentage of it and filter out most of it.

What you choose to filter in, as well as, how you interpret that information, is very subjective and happens on an unconscious level. In a split-moment, your unconscious mind decides what is relevant to you, allows it in, and makes an interpretation of what it means. These filtered-in pieces of information are what define your model of reality.

Regardless of what you filter in or out, and regardless of your subjective interpretations, actual reality exists and has an effect on your survival, stability, and well-being. For that reason, your ability to perceive what is real greatly impacts your ability (or lack of ability) to survive, have stability, and well-being.

For example, without enough awareness of what is actually real, you can’t distinguish between where safety versus danger is; or you can’t find where love is, as opposed to hatred or manipulation. Without enough awareness of what is real, you have no true basis for anything you decide to do in life.

It is not necessary to be aware of the complete picture of reality in order to function well in your life. We generally have the capacity to take in enough relevant information to function well. How well you’re able to perceive what is real (and, therefore, function in life) depends, instead, on the particular information you allow in and how accurately you interpret that information.

“Limiting decisions” have a lot to do with what pieces of information you filter in or out and how you interpret that information. ….
