The ability to come into the present moment is very important. It’s how we know what’s real, as opposed to letting others define reality for us.
In order to understand how to come into the present moment, we have to understand what truth is, because truth and coming into the present moment are inextricably connected.
Defining Truth:
Many people use the terms, “my truth” or “your truth.” This is not what truth is.
Truth is an objective fact. For example, when we gave an opinion, it is true that we had an opinion and that we gave it. That is a fact. But the opinion we gave may or may not be accurate.
In the areas of our life in which we are avoiding what is true, we can’t come into the present moment. That is because when we are avoiding truth, we are generally avoiding what we feel, not acknowledging what we are thinking, and/or not paying attention to what we are doing, i.e. we are avoiding our present-moment experience.
The present moment is where we find out what is true. In areas in which we avoid what is true, we most likely have limiting decisions that we are trying to avoid.
When I work with clients, in order to get clear about what the clients’ issues are and how they have them formed, I bring clients into the present moment by asking them questions. I start by asking them to describe what isn’t working in their life, starting with the general situation, and moving into specific examples.
This process generally moves from the clients’ subjective experience to specifically what they are talking about – for example, who did what and how the clients specifically responded. I keep probing until I get an internal experience of what they are experiencing. In other words, I come into present-moment experience with them
From there I can identify the limiting decisions that are distorting their experience and keeping them from coming into the present moment where they can function effectively in their here-and-now experience. Then we clear the limiting decisions using the NLP Timeline process.
