It seems we have always known how powerful truth is. Through the ages those in power have often tried to claim ownership of it. We are now in an era in which what is true is being challenged in a way that offers us a major transformational opportunity.
This article describes a particular way people behave or interact with each in the world today that tries to redefine what is real. It describes why many, to varying degrees, buy into it; and, in general terms, what the solution is. And then it briefly describes how this relates to my work:
The catch phrases “fake news” and “alternate truth” have been bringing this phenomenon to consciousness in a big way, in a political scene that many find troubling.
Dictator-Type Authority Figures
Dictator-type authority figures still exist, to varying degrees and on many different levels, in the world today. You can find them in, for example, governments, businesses, places of worship and other organizations, and even in families. They affect how much of the world’s populations perceive what is real and true.
These authority figures are focused on controlling how those under their influence perceive what reality is, in other words, what is perceived of as truth. They are holding in place an alternate reality in which they feel in control. This alternate reality might, for example, support them in feeling powerful, right, worthy of respect, valuable, safe, and superior.
Why Do People Buy into the Dictator’s Version of Truth?
Some of the reasons many of us buy into the dictator’s version of truth are: we believe we are dependent on that person for our well-being or survival; we don’t trust our own perceptions; or because we believe that life, inherently, is not designed to work. We might believe, for example, that life and people are inherently dangerous, unfair, or out-of-control. We also might believe ourselves to be, for example, powerless, not worthy enough, or inadequate to cope with life.
Many believe human control works better than the way life actually is. And so they are looking for someone to take on the responsibility of controlling life in order to make it work for them. They might look for someone who has a similar world view as they do, who is skilled at influencing others to conform to their will in order to hold in place that world view.
In the extreme, the dictator creates, in his inner circle, a world reality that is not to be questioned. Every person brought into this inner circle; everything that is said, or decided on, or focused on; every rule or law put in place; every piece of news that is allowed to be published or acknowledged as real out in the larger world, is for the purpose of holding in place the dictator’s world reality.
Those who go along with and support this world reality are rewarded and protected. Those who don’t are punished and excluded or gotten rid of. The objective is to create a seamless, solid front that can’t be questioned.
So, What Is the Solution?
What is the solution, in this era of “fake news” and “alternate facts” when we have a political leadership that is using more and more of its resources to hold in place a dysfunctional version of reality?
You could say, it’s an issue of who really holds the power? What actually defines what is real and true (i.e. what is reality)?
To find a solution, the focus can’t be on what is outside us to define or control reality for us. It takes an understanding that life, in its undistorted form, is inherently designed to work. The solution is an internal process of coming into alignment with a larger framework than human control. And whatever actions we do or don’t take in participating in the world must be based on this larger framework.
The contrast between the distorted versions of what is true and real that is being put forward in the world today, and our direct experience of what is true and real, is becoming so great that this gives us the opportunity to shift what we orient our sense of reality based on. It’s a transformational opportunity. Shifting what we orient our sense of reality is based on, and expanding into a larger framework, is how we come into our own power. It is moving into a more conscious and direct way to access what is real and true.
Now, How Does this Relate to the Work I Do?
To put it simply, the NLP TimeLine process clears unconscious, childhood limiting decisions that cause you to believe life doesn’t work and, usually, that there is something inherently wrong with you. For example, a limiting decision might be that people can’t be trusted. It might be that in order to survive you have to give up your dreams or who you really are. Or, it might be decisions such as that you are not valuable, not worthy of respect, or powerless. These are all forms of deciding that life is against you and are never true.
The emotional defense systems people develop to defend themselves against these limiting decisions cause us to try to control the way we believe life is and/or to try to control other people in our lives. They cause us to give away our power and let other people control us.
