What is your source of stability?

Is it your husband, wife, lover, child?
Is it your bank account, job, shopping at the mall?

Is it popping over to get that last minute ingredient at the store,
without a thought of risk?

What happens when every physical contact becomes the potential for harm,
when your means of livelihood is jeopardized,
when your ability to pay your rent or mortgage is uncertain,
when the man in the white house is dysfunctional,
when civil unrest threatens to shake up the status quo?

What happens when brutal policemen are called to account
and other policemen retaliate by calling in sick?

What happens when you start questioning
whether or not you are prejudiced
or are you just politically correct (or not)?

We wonder if there is a solid foundation we can count on
in all of this turmoil?

And then —
that irrepressible human spirit shines through:

Across the street a teenage girl
walks from her car into her house,
full of the presence of who she is,
undefined by the trials of the times.

Across the lawn, I talk with my next door heart-filled neighbor
and feel the truth of love.

There is a sense of oneness in the community,
neighbor to neighbor, acknowledging our shared experience,
heart expanding, acknowledging the heart presence of the other.

And, there are the poets, the speakers of truth, the creative entrepreneurs,
who speak out, undefined by the trials and limitations of the day.

The will of the people is shifting,
the human spirit is showing itself.
It is stopping leaning on those in power to define the social order —
the old, made-up structures and mores
that separate the haves from the have-nots,
truncating, limiting the possibilities for us all.

We have been shaken into becoming present with each other,
with what really matters,
with what is really true.

For the moment, we are no longer distracted by
the various aspects of our lives
we have leaned on as our source of stability,
that hold in place a false sense of security.

For the moment this has shifted in the strong wind of the times
and something deeper and more true has emerged.

Can we take hold of this shift in consciousness and build on it,
making our way forward?

Or, when life normalizes, will we fall back,
forgetting what we have learned?

Somehow I think the spirit that has been released
is like the genie who can’t be stuffed back into the bottle.
