People with the defense system of narcissism are usually in relationship with those who have a lot of self-hate. It is an interlocking emotional defense system* that both sides of the equation are holding in place. In relationships with a narcissist, he’s the only one who exists, from his point-of-view. He’s the one who determines what reality is.
Do Couples Have to Compromise to Make Relationships Work?
Sarah: Then how does it work with a couple? You have to compromise and push and pull to know what the other person wants. I thought in intimate relationships you just do things for each other.
Jane: It’s not about what the person wants that’s the issue, but what is motivating him to want it. If what he wants is a substitute for some emotional need that he doesn’t have access to receiving, it won’t work and will conflict with you.
Codependency in Relationships: How to Recognize & Prevent It
Codependency in relationships happens when people don’t openly admit what they want from each other in reality because they have given up on the real thing, such as love or feeling valuable. What they are attached to are symbols for what they want that they think they can control, such as certain behaviors from each other, like taking out the trash, buying you flowers, or not interrupting you.
